1960s

The Quests: Back in the '60s, this band was so big that it was able to topple international acts on Singapore's pop charts. They did countless concerts, had their own TV and radio shows and even a fan club in Hongkong.

Other big names of the era: Naomi and The Boys, Wang Sa and Yeh Fong.

1970s

Sweet Charity: This rock band was popular in the '70s and '80s, belting out hard rock and heavy metal songs in Malay.Fronted by Ramli Sarip, Sweet Charity disbanded in 1986.

Other stars era: Matthew and The Mandarins, Anita Sarawak.

1980s

Hua Liang and Zhao Jin: Dubbed the best local comedy duo after Wang Sa and Yeh Fong, Hua (also known as Big Mouth) and Zhao broke into the TV scene after becoming second runners-up in a national xiangsheng (Chinese cross-talk) competition in the mid-'80s.

Hua died in a traffic accident in 1995.

1990s

The Sugarflies: Formed in 1994, this all-girl band released its debut album, And That's Why, in September this year. The first single, What About, topped the Top Ten chart of Heart 91.3 radio station. They were the opening act for Japanese group Shonen Knife's recent concert here.

Other big names: Force Vomit, Jai, Kit Chan, Moses Lim and Jack Neo.
