during the early days, Mr Lim Kim San, former
Minister for National Development, once
thought that a block of flats along Margaret
Drive looked crooked.

While it is important for every citizen of
Singapore to have a roof over his head, it is
equally important for Singaporeans to be able
to protect their homes in times of war. Since 1967, National
Service has contributed greatly to building
up Singapore's defence. Male Singaporeans are
trained to become disciplined, fighting-fit
soldiers.

The SAF celebrates 30
years in 1997

| With public housing and national
defence firmly in place, Singapore proceeds
to develop itself as a young nation. A new currency went into circulation
on June 1967 while Singapore Airlines soared into the skies
for the first time in 1972.
And in 1987, the Mass Rapid
Transit (MRT) began operating, giving
Singaporeans another mode of transport.
