Proven wrong by a fish

Dr Albert Winsemius, Singapore's economic architect, had a habit of being correct. He was right about building the port, right about the industrial push, and right again about turning the country into a financial hub. But a fish once proved him wrong.

For 25 years from 1960, Dr Winsemius helped to shape Singapore's economy.

Today, Singapore is one of the world's most competitive Newly Industrialised Economies.

Singapore's vibrant economic growth is accompanied by a stable government.

In the past 30 years, Singapore's political scene was dominated by one political party -- the People's Action Party led by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

In Nov 1981, lawyer Mr J B Jeyaretnam of the Workers' Party became the first opposition Member of Parliament since 1966, when he won the Anson by-election.

Mr Goh Chok Tong was sworned in as Prime Minister in 1990. Mr Lee Kuan Yew remained in the Cabinet as Senior Minister.
