The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is ready to hit a new note with the appointment of a new music director.

China-born Mr Lan Shui took over the post on Jan 1, 1997, succeeding maestro Choo Hoey who left the SSO in July 1996 after a 17-year tenure.

The local arts scene will get another boost in 2001 with the opening of The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. Costing overt $500 million, the Esplanade will house a 1,800-seat concert hall, a lyric theatre that can seat 2,000, three smaller indoor theatres, several outdoor performing areas and a retail complex.

The education system in Singapore has seen many changes through the years -- like the introduction of streaming and National Education.

One significant feature of the education system was the emphasis on bilingualism. In the 1970s, the Government decided to promote the use of Mandarin as the common language for the Chinese by launching the "Speak More Mandarin, Use Less Dialects" campaign.

LIFELINES

One major driving force behind Singapore's education system is the late Dr Tay Eng Soon.

As the Minister of State for Education, he helped to shape polytechnic education. He also set up the Singapore Open University Degree Programme.
