The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is ready to hit a new note with the appointment of a new music director. China-born Mr Lan Shui took over the post on Jan 1, 1997, succeeding maestro Choo Hoey who left the SSO in July 1996 after a 17-year tenure.
The local arts scene will get another boost in 2001 with the opening of The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. Costing overt $500 million, the Esplanade will house a 1,800-seat concert hall, a lyric theatre that can seat 2,000, three smaller indoor theatres, several outdoor performing areas and a retail complex.
