meet Singapore's trained manpower needs in
the 1980s.

Secondary 1 next year
- Intake increase of 14 per cent at
Pre-U level next year
- Intake increase of 16 per cent at the
varsity next year
- The largest increase at varsity will
be in Engineering faculty
Announcing this at Nanyang University's
21st and final convocation ceremony
yesterday, the Education Minister and NUS
vice-chancellor, Dr Tony Tan, said:
"The key to the success of our
restructuring programme (economic) is the
availability of trained manpower. More
skilled workers, technicians and university
graduates have to be produced."
He said that meeting the manpower needs
will depend on a good education system. Next
year, a new education system will be
implemented in Secondary 1.
Its main feature is that secondary
schooling will take five years for average
students and four years for those above
average.
