EDUCATION Minister Dr Tony Tan yesterday
unveiled the Government's new plans to invest
in education, from pre-primary up to tertiary
level.
The plans, to be implemented from this
year until 1988, include:
- Schooling from age five instead of
six
- Single-session schools
- Six to seven new junior colleges to
be built
- New tertiary courses
- Higher enrolment in tertiary
institutions
- Part-time studies for workers to keep
abreast of changes in technology
Last week the First Deputy Prime Minister
and Defence Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong, had
said that the Government would invest an
extra $3 billion in education over the next
10 years.
Dr Tan's priority last year had been to
resolve major issues. Now his attention would
be on developing excellence in education, he
said.
