Above all, he was a hero. On the pitch, Fandi Ahmad was genius personified. Off it, he showed a kindness and humility that endeared him to eight and 80-year-olds. Singaporeans have seen him grow from skinny kampung boy to regional soccer star to devoted family man.

1983 : Fond farewell ... Fandi throws his No. 17 jersey to fans at the National Stadium before leaving for Dutch club FC Groningen.


1985 : He joined Federal Territory (now called KLFA).


1989 : Fandi was given the boot - The Golden Boot, that is, for being Malaysia Cup's top scorer.


1993 : Book him ... Autographing a biography of him written by Straits Times journalist Wilfred Yeo.


1996 : Congratulations ... Fandi and Nur Sarah's wedding was a national celebration.
