The Straits Times, May 28, 1959
I have read some of the correspondence
in your columns in which the writers express their
despair at making up their minds as to which party
they should cast their vote for. I agree that it is
necessary not to split the vote and to be
single-minded. Let us examine the relative qualities
of the candidates.
Independents: These have no
policy and are naturally fence-sitters. Theirs will
be a lone voice in the wilderness and will have no
effect.
Smaller parties: The same
remarks apply.
LIB-SOCS (Liberal Socialists):
Anti-communists and forthright, but have they the men
to form a responsible government? Most of their best
men have gone over to the SPA (Singapore People's
Alliance) to put up a united front. It was a bad day
when the Lib-Socs decided to fight on their own.
There is some comfort in the thought that they may
yet toe the line in the interests of national safety.
PAP: Some very good
men, but in the wrong camp. They are very earnest and
sincere men, but can they control the extremist and
subversive elements in their ranks? Apart from all
this, I do not like these threats to all the
freedoms.
SPA: Have had
experience and should profit from their mistakes.
What government has not made mistakes! We should
remember what we have received from them:
Free education in the primary schools,
from the age of six: more hospitals and therefore
more beds; a central provident fund and a national
insurance scheme to come.
I know for whom my vote will be cast! --
SURE AND HAPPY, Singapore
Next: Think again Mr Lee
