Mr Lee Kuan Yew, secretary-general of the People's Action Party, will be Singapore's first Prime Minister.
... Crowds gathered outside Government House when it was known that Mr Lee Kuan Yew had been summoned there by the Governor.
Dressed in open white shirt, Mr Lee drove through the huge iron gates at 11 am in his black Mercedes Benz. He was at the wheel himself.
... Shouts of "Merdeka" greeted Mr Lee as he drove through the crowd who had waited outside the main gates.
