The Straits TImes, May 28, 1959
I am a wage-earner enjoying a
comfortable, though not luxurious, income, conscious
of the fact that only a commercially thriving
Singapore is making my position possible.
I am also one of many who subscribe to
the principles of the People's Action Party.
I believe that, despite its faults and
its unnecessary demonstrations of anti-British
sentiments, it is still a party ranking high above
the others in sincerity, in organisation and in
having a practical political programme based on
socialist lines.

But do I dare to hope for a PAP victory
on May 30?
I was warned by my employers, as many
others have been, that if the PAP won this election I
would have to look for another job as they would
close down and shift their business to the
Federation.
Whether this is an empty threat or not I
am unable to say. The stakes are plain: a continued,
comfortable income or a PAP victory.
I have deliberated over this problem for
the past week without being able to arrive at any
solution.
Which path should I take? Security in
servility or abandoning my ideals?
This morning, my employers again
threatened my colleagues and I with hints of the
consequences of a PAP victory. It helped me to make
up my mind.
I will vote PAP and try to get my
friends to do the same. -- PAPSY, Singapore
