Life in pre-war
Singapore was relaxed, and the wealthier ones
enjoyed themselves at their country clubs and
swimming clubs. Here are extracts of a report
on the opening of the Tanglin Club pool. |
Singapores fashionable residential quarter
had another amenity added yesterday with the opening
of the swimming pool at the Tanglin Club. A large
crowd witnessed the opening ceremony, the success of
which was enhanced by the brilliant morning sunshine.
The president (Mr. O.P. Griffith-Jones) made a
reference to George Lansbury (the pioneer of mixed
bathing in the Serpentine) in his opening remarks to
introduce Mrs. Pritchard.
Looking down from the balcony, he indicated the
pool shimmering in the sunlight, where the green and
white tiles could be seen through the clear water...
