"I went to the Pavilion Cinema, opposite our
office, on a Sunday afternoon, to watch a film with a
friend, Tan Tong Seng," said T.S.
"His brother was one of the top Asian
journalists of those days. My friend told me they
(The Malaya Tribune newspaper office) were looking
for young reporters, and if I was interested, why not
try?
"I never had any leanings towards journalism
-- but I was interested to know how a newspaper was
published.

"Even in those days, I used to look
at the (Malaya) Tribune and the Straits Times
and the Singapore Free Press. I used to
compare the appearances of those three
papers.
T.S. decided to see the then editor and
general manager of the Malaya Tribune, Mr EM
Glover.

T.S. ended up becoming a part-time reporter. He
worked as a clerk by day, and as a reporter in the
evenings.
"Glover interviewed me and said, young man,
you have absolutely no experience in newspaper work
but you seem quite keen... I will give you a chance
if you are prepared to work beyond office hours. You
can work as a reporter after you finish your job at
Cold Storage.
"But I do not want you to take the risk of
resigning from your present job until I give you a
letter confirming your appointment."
